General Information of Cutback Bitumen RC-70

Cutback asphalt is an asphalt cement that contains a solvent or distillate such as gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, or naphtha. These additives help keep the asphalt liquid at ambient temperatures, thereby improving its ability to coat aggregates effectively. Moreover, the designation of cutback asphalt follows a system where two letters and a numerical digit represent each type. Typically, cutback asphalt contains between 12% and 40% distillates. However, due to the high demand for distillates in energy applications and increasingly strict air quality regulations, the use of cutback asphalt has steadily declined. In fact, when gasoline or naphtha is used to flux asphalt cement, the final product is known as “rapid curing” (RC) cutback asphalt. Specifications permit up to 45% distillate in the manufacturing of RC-70 cutback asphalt. Our Cutback Bitumen RC-70 complies with ASTM D2028-97 (reapproved in 2004) for rapid-curing petroleum asphalts used in pavement construction and treatment. Furthermore, it is commonly used in spraying and some mixing applications. Specifically, cutback bitumen is made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with solvents like kerosene, white spirit, gasoline, and naphtha, which control the curing time effectively. The bitumen supplied by Gold Bitumen Co. is produced from vacuum residue (short residue) feedstock obtained through fractional/vacuum distillation of crude oil. Penetration-grade bitumens are specified based on penetration and softening point tests. Additionally, their thermoplastic properties cause them to soften at high temperatures and harden at lower temperatures. This unique temperature-viscosity relationship is crucial for determining key performance parameters such as adhesion, rheology, durability, and application temperature. Uses of Cutback Asphalt RC-70

Cutback agents lower the viscosity of bitumen, making it easier to apply as a primer to road pavement aggregate base courses or substrates. Kerosene is commonly used as a cutback agent, with concentrations adjusted according to local conditions and requirements.
  • Prime Coat & Cold Application: Ideally suited for prime coats and cold applications due to easy use without the need for thinning or heating. Consequently, this saves both time and energy during road construction projects.
  • Surface Preparation: Facilitates the initial incorporation of asphalt into non-asphalt-based surfaces before further construction treatments. Additionally, it helps in enhancing surface durability.
  • Waterproofing: Applied to waterproof surfaces, plug capillary voids, and bond loose mineral particles effectively. As a result, it improves the longevity of infrastructure projects.
