bitumen K1-40

General Description of Cationic Bitumen Emulsion K1-40

Tack coat K1-40 cationic bitumen emulsion (rapid setting) road emulsion is an emulsified asphalt containing minimum 40% bitumen and 60% water. It is a low viscosity emulsion used mainly for tack coating. K1-40 cationic bitumen emulsion is made according to British standard BS 434 Part 1: 1984 Class K1-40.

Bitumen Emulsion K1-40 is cold-applied, liquid-based, making it ideal for constructing and repairing pavements, driveways, roads, and highways. The prefix ‘K’ indicates a cationic emulsion, while ‘1’ signifies rapid breaking. The number after the hyphen reflects the bitumen content, hence K1-40 denotes rapid break, cationic emulsion with 40% normal bitumen content.

Uses of Cationic Bitumen Emulsion K1-40

Bitumen Emulsion K1-40 serves as a tack coat, creating a strong bond between existing surfaces and overlays, like hot-rolled asphalt, macadam, and slurry seals.

Key purposes include:
1. Reducing spillage risks between layers.
2. Minimizing sliding during overlay, improving compaction.

K1-40 is also used in mist spraying and concrete curing operations.

Applications:

  • Tack coat
  • Single surface treatment
  • Multiple surface treatment
  • Sand seal

K1-40 applies effectively at ambient temperatures with aggregates that don’t require complete drying.

Application Conditions of Cationic Emulsion Grade K1-40

Apply Grade K1-40 at ambient temperature with a spray rate of 0.25 to 0.70 liters per square meter (0.05 to 0.15 gallons per square yard).

Ensure dry, frost-free conditions between 5°C and 35°C. Before application, roll drums to mix contents thoroughly. Apply using a broom, squeegee, or spray for uniform distribution. Spray equipment should meet BS3136 standards.

Preparation:

Surfaces should be dry, clean, and free from dust, oil, and debris. In hot conditions, lightly dampen surfaces to slow water loss and improve adhesion, avoiding standing water during application.

Packing of Cationic Grade  K1-40

Available in:

  • IBC Tank, Flexi Tank (bulk)
  • Reconditioned steel drums (200 liters)
  • New steel drums (200 liters)
