General Information of Cutback Bitumen RC-3000
Cutback asphalt is a type of asphalt cement mixed with a solvent or distillate, such as gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, or naphtha. This combination makes the asphalt liquid at ambient temperatures, thus enhancing its ability to coat aggregates effectively. Interestingly, two letters followed by a numerical digit designate or name a cutback asphalt.
Composition and Properties
Cutback asphalt contains between 12 and 40 percent distillate. However, due to the high demand for distillates in energy applications and stricter air quality regulations, the use of cutback asphalt has steadily declined. When gasoline or naphtha acts as a fluxing agent, the product becomes “rapid curing” (RC) cutback asphalt. Up to 45 percent distillate is permissible in manufacturing RC-3000 cutback asphalt.

Penetration grade bitumen blends with solvents like kerosene, white spirit, gasoline, and naphtha to control curing time. Notably, petroleum-grade bitumen, manufactured through fractional/vacuum distillation of crude oil, forms the base material.
Uses of Cutback Bitumen RC-3000
Cutback agents reduce bitumen viscosity, making it ideal as a primer for road pavement aggregate base courses. Kerosene serves as a common cutback agent, adjusted to local conditions and project requirements.
Additionally, cutback bitumen is perfect for prime coats and cold applications because it requires no thinning or heating. Consequently, RC-3000 integrates asphalt into non-asphalt-based surfaces, preparing them for further construction treatments. Furthermore, it waterproofs surfaces, plugs capillary voids, and bonds loose mineral particles effectively.

Cutback Bitumen RC-3000 is packaged in thick steel drums placed on pallets to prevent leaks. Besides, it is also available in bulk, transported via bitutainers and tankers for large projects.
Safety of Cutback Bitumen RC-3000
Before use, refer to the Safety Data Sheets. Always transport, use, and store at the lowest possible temperature. Eliminate ignition sources during application and avoid inhalation or skin contact. Use proper PPE, especially when hot. Prevent product entry into stormwater or sewer systems.
